Daily Written Assignments

The daily writing assignments, which are graded on a pass/fail basis, establish the maximum grade that the student can earn in this course (in technical terms, the daily writing assignments represent a "non-compensatory" grading technique). Thus, in order to earn an "A" for the course, the student must earn an "A" on the daily assignments in addition to an "A" on the essays and exams. If the student earns a "B" on the daily assignments, then the maximum grade the student can earn for the course is a "B", regardless of how well the student does on the essays and exams.

The following is the scale for the daily work:

Maximum Grade Number of Points (3 per Assignmenet)

A

64

Bonus: If the student completes all the daily writing assignments (69 points) with a "pass" grade, then the student's final course grade will be raised 5%.

B+

60

B

56

C+

52

C

48

D

44

In order for a daily written assignment to be given a "pass" grade, it must be complete and demonstrate a good faith effort on the student's part. Incomplete assignments or assignments that demonstrate little effort will receive a "fail" grade.

Quizzes

The quizzes will consist of true/false and multiple choice questions, identification of terms, map indentifications, and short answer questions. All questions will be graded as either correct or incorrect, though partial credit will be given for incomplete answers on the indentifications and short answers.

The grading criteria for the essays is presented on the following page.
