Herbert Vorgrimler, Sacramental Theology, trans. Linda M. Maloney (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1992) paperback, $30.  Before Vatican II, sacramenta in genere was a fundamental area of theological reflection; since the Council, it has been somewhat overshadowed by so-called liturgical theology.  However, this volume, by one of Karl Rahner’s colleagues, offers a fine overview of key issues & doctrines.

 

Louis-Marie Chauvet, Symbol and Sacrament: A Sacramental Reinterpretation of Christian Existence, trans. P.  Madigan & M. Beaumont (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1995) hardcover, $50.  A difficult, but important and quite influential work.  It offers what might be termed a postmodern sacramental theology.

John P. Schanz, Introduction to the Sacraments (New York: Pueblo, 1983).

Edward Schillebeeckx, Christ the Sacrament of the Encounter with God, trans. Paul Barrett (New York: Sheed & Ward, 1963).  One of the breakthrough theological texts influencing Vatican II.
